Following its official release, “Closer to Your Heart” marks a deeply personal and spiritual milestone for singer-songwriter Nicole Wells. Co-released with acclaimed artist Jon Klaasen, the warm and soulful new single reflects on faith, humility, patience, and the desire to develop a deeper relationship with God.
Written by Nicole Wells alongside co-writer Brianne Nealon, the song captures the often-unseen journey of prayer, waiting, personal growth, and perseverance that can precede the completion of a meaningful piece of music.
To accompany the single, an official live music video has also been released, bringing an intimate and worshipful dimension to the song while allowing listeners to experience its emotional message in a live setting.
“Closer to Your Heart” also represents a significant new chapter for Wells. The release marks her return to sharing music following several years focused on navigating chronic pain and physical rehabilitation. During that season, Wells continued writing songs that emerged from a prolonged period of prayer, reflection, and waiting on God.
For Wells, the creative process behind “Closer to Your Heart” was itself part of that spiritual journey. “I almost gave up on this song because it was really important to me to say it exactly how my heart heard it. Some songs sprout quickly while others take their time. ‘Closer to Your Heart’ needed deeper roots before coming to the surface.”She explains that bringing the song to life required both an inward and outward process of growth.
“It took years of heart work followed by hard work, really digging more into areas of humility, gratefulness, and compassion, and leaning in closer to hear the heart of God and what truly matters.”
That pursuit ultimately became central to the song’s message: a longing to remain close to God and to follow wherever He leads.
“Because after all, wherever He is, that’s where I want to be. I write songs for God with God. They are personal to me. I share them with others in order to be an encouragement to anyone who needs to be uplifted.”
Inspired in part by meditation on Psalm 103 and sustained through years of prayer, Wells eventually connected with Brianne Nealon, whose collaboration helped shape the song into its finished form.
