Berklee College of Music’s annual Gospel Performance Program concluded its second year on the Boston, Massachusetts campus, running from Monday, July 24 to Friday, July 28, 2023. Introduced by the college’s Africana Studies Division in 2022, this immersive five-day program was designed for high school students aged 15 and older with at least six months of playing or vocal experience.

The 2023 edition of the program was highlighted by the participation of guest artist VaShawn Mitchell, a renowned singer and songwriter who has earned seven Stellar Awards. Mitchell, known for his deep connection to Gospel music, delivered a master class and collaborated with the students for a final concert held on Thursday, July 27.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in ensemble rehearsals, technique-in-performance classes, and insightful discussions about the history of gospel music. The program also included a presentation on the gospel music industry, which covered both performance and business techniques, while delving into the genre’s cultural significance and its links to contemporary music.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois—a city with deep roots in Gospel music—VaShawn Mitchell’s early exposure to the genre left an enduring impact on his life. His affinity for Gospel music led him to serve as a Music Director and Minister of Music in Chicago during his formative years. As time passed, Mitchell’s artistic vision expanded, shaping him into an accomplished worship leader and a respected Gospel songwriter.

Beyond his own recording career, Mitchell has utilized his creative talents to influence and support other artists. He has received two Dove Awards from the Gospel Music Association for his work as a producer. Always dedicated to fostering emerging voices in the Gospel music industry, Mitchell took on the role of President & CEO of the Gospel Heritage Foundation in 2018. He has ambitious plans to broaden the impact of this ministry, empowering the next generation for their musical journey
