Sydney-based band Extra Time is thrilled to announce the release of their latest single, “The Girl Who Rules the Sea,” from their current album Songs With Long Titles. The single is accompanied by a captivating music video filmed at the iconic Bondi Beach, showcasing both live-action drone and underwater footage.
Frontman Brendan McNamara draws on a deeply personal experience for the song, recounting a near-drowning incident at Bondi Beach when he was just six years old. As an Irish immigrant child, enthusiastic but lacking strong swimming skills, Brendan was saved by a surfer girl who not only rescued him but also introduced him to some colorful Australian vernacular.
“The Girl Who Rules the Sea is a love letter to Bondi Beach, where I was born. It’s a reflection on that near-fateful day when I was rescued by an Amazonian surfer girl who vastly expanded my swearing vocabulary. It’s a memory I’ll always carry with me, and this song is my way of giving back to the place that holds such significance in my life.” says Brendan.
The music video, directed by Leonard Clifford and Chris Flaxman with motion editing by Veronita Va, is a stunning visual representation of the song. Inspired by the bold geometric lines of Piet Mondrian’s artwork, the video creatively merges animated versions of Mondrian’s signature grid with breathtaking footage of Bondi’s crystal-blue waters.
“The Girl Who Rules the Sea” is the latest release from Extra Time’s double gatefold vinyl album, Songs With Long Titles, which has been gaining international acclaim. The album is a journey through life’s ups and downs, blending classic rock with jazz and blues influences. Fans of Steely Dan, Supertramp, and Sting will find much to love in this intriguing collection of songs.
The album was recorded and mixed over 20 days at Damien Gerard Studios in West Gosford, with Brendan McNamara teaming up with former Los Angeles co-producer and engineer Andrew Beck. A stellar lineup of session musicians contributed to the project, resulting in a rich and diverse sound that elevates Extra Time’s signature style.
